The wicker industry in the Chimbarongo area has a long tradition and as such Chimbarongo is known as “The Wicker Capital”.
As one of the main global producers of wicker, Chile has definitely offered us one of the most complete experiences in the basketry tradition and each of the processes it involves: the harvest of wicker, storage and preparation prior to weaving. Wicker is famous for its flexibility, but still remains a quite rigid material, usually handled by men who work with wet stems to make it more flexible. Nowadays, Chilean artisans use their own tools to measure the width and thickness of the wicker stems.
A collaboration between Madrid-based designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón and a group of artisans in the Colombian Amazon and beyond, the PET Lamp collection is a vibrant, soulful project that transforms trash into treasure. Each PET Lamp is one of a kind. The shades are created by hand from discarded plastic bottles that are cut into strips and interwoven with dyed and undyed palm tree fibers by artisans in South America.

The new series of light sculptures named Ambra combines volumes of ancient stones and aluminium. Centerpiece is the Mexican “Toba volcánica” stone that consists of minerals, glass and volcanic debris ejected one million years ago during severe eruptions. Fragments in the geometrical surfaces are testament to these explosions and movement.
The contrast between porous textures and smooth dark red underlines the studios contemporary approach on traditional materials and craft. The connecting components between the sculptural stone elements and the aluminium parts originate from an intensive research of linking unique handmade shapes with industrial parts.
