Description
Due to the war, many Ukrainians lost their homes and had to take refuge in temporary accommodations. The "Roots of Home" collection evokes an ancient Ukrainian hut with its lampshade, representing a terraced roof of straw or shingles, covered using the "tyruvannia" technique."Tyr" is a petroleum product extracted from the Carpathian Mountains, rich in paraffin. This treatment gives the wooden roof panels a black color.
The "Roots of Home" collection is available in three sizes: a table lamp, a medium-sized lamp, and a floor lamp. The top of the lamp is composed of a metal frame, hand-woven canvas, and dyed rye straw. The base, shaped like a truncated cone, is inlaid with rye straw dyed using the marquetry technique.
The shape of the lamps has a modern look so that the lamps fit into today's interiors, while projecting ancient origins.
Roots of home by Ruda Studio
RUDA studio is a collective of artisans specializing in creating unique household objects in Odessa, Ukraine. Their creations are inspired by natural materials and ancestral artisanal techniques. Each product, although functional, presents itself as a work of art that touches the soul and incites reflection and reinterpretation of cultural heritage. Through their work, they revive the knowledge of Ukrainian folklore while addressing important environmental themes and exploring the relationship between man and nature.
By exploring the techniques of the popular artisans of their countries, they decided to modernize traditional marquetry. By combining functionality and aesthetics, they propose using straw as a unique material for exclusive objects.
Their studio actively studies the ancient technique of marquetry. Their creations begin in western Ukraine, where Orest, an 80-year-old grandfather, collects straw for their objects. He carefully sorts the straw by length and diameter. Then, in their workshop, the straw is dyed before being inlaid.
Apparently located between past and future, these pieces illustrate timeless objects. They combine the stylization of vintage Art Deco with the philosophy of modern design.

The new series of light sculptures named Ambra combines volumes of ancient stones and aluminium. Centerpiece is the Mexican “Toba volcánica” stone that consists of minerals, glass and volcanic debris ejected one million years ago during severe eruptions. Fragments in the geometrical surfaces are testament to these explosions and movement.

The contrast between porous textures and smooth dark red underlines the studios contemporary approach on traditional materials and craft. The connecting components between the sculptural stone elements and the aluminium parts originate from an intensive research of linking unique handmade shapes with industrial parts.
