Description
The sconce is inspired by the reliefs and statues of Persepolis in ancient Iran, as well as traditional Moroccan jewelry—a poetic fusion of ancient architecture and handcrafted ornamentation.
A brass frame wrapped in braided leather (options: tan/beige, cool gray, or black).
Semi-precious stone beads (agate, desert jasper, jade, or white jade), each drilled and attached to a fluted post, then threaded onto the looped structure.
Gabriel Hendifar, artistic director and CEO of the New York-based lighting and furniture design studio is emerging on the international design scene. In 2019 his former partner in life and work, Jeremy Anderson joined him. After the couple separated in late 2020, Gabriel created Apparatus to focus on his active and thriving ceramic art practice. Since then, Hendifar has taken the reins of the company. Each object, explains Hendifar, is part of his Iranian family history, mainly his grandmother. His parents, who fled Iran in 1979 and settled in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, were both musicians. When he was a child, he loved watching his father play the Persian drum while his mother sang and played the piano. He inherited this sense of spectacle.

The new series of light sculptures named Ambra combines volumes of ancient stones and aluminium. Centerpiece is the Mexican “Toba volcánica” stone that consists of minerals, glass and volcanic debris ejected one million years ago during severe eruptions. Fragments in the geometrical surfaces are testament to these explosions and movement.

The contrast between porous textures and smooth dark red underlines the studios contemporary approach on traditional materials and craft. The connecting components between the sculptural stone elements and the aluminium parts originate from an intensive research of linking unique handmade shapes with industrial parts.
